Nina
Davuluri, an American whose parents were born in India, won the Miss America
contest. Entire nation was overwhelmed and exhibited jubilation. But, a little
clarification, the nation here I’m talking about is India. After the widespread
news about her win and Indian celebrations, I undertook a background check wondering
did we send her to the contest; however, I didn’t find any such case!
Yes,
I do agree, she has an Indian link, or rather Indian ‘roots’ but why are we
overdoing the celebrations for an American becoming Miss America? Ms. Davuluri
herself has stated that she is foremost an ‘American’.
Probably,
it’s because of our well-known fetish for celebrations; we attend our cousin
friend sister nephew’s birthday with the same excitement as of our brother’s
marriage. No doubt we have umpteen number of festivals and more stories
justifying our celebrations.
Well,
that’s exactly how we Indians are – love us or hate us we’ll celebrate for
both!!
